Rent receipt rules for HRA

Employers typically ask for monthly or quarterly rent receipts to allow HRA exemption. If annual rent exceeds ₹1,00,000, your landlord's PAN is mandatory. A ₹1 revenue stamp is needed only on receipts for cash payments above ₹5,000 — bank/UPI payments need no stamp.

Keep the payment trail (bank statements/UPI) consistent with the receipts — AIS cross-checks rent claims now. Paying rent to parents? Fully legal with a genuine bank trail, and they should report it in their ITR.
