3. 50% of (Basic + DA)₹2,40,000

Exempt HRA (tax-free)

₹1,92,000

Taxable HRA

₹48,000

HRA exemption is available in the old tax regime only. Rent above ₹1L/year needs landlord's PAN; rent to parents is allowed with genuine payment trail.

How HRA exemption works

The tax-free portion of HRA is the least of: (1) actual HRA received, (2) rent paid minus 10% of basic salary + DA, and (3) 50% of basic + DA in metro cities (40% non-metro). The balance HRA is taxable.

Keep rent receipts; share your landlord's PAN if annual rent exceeds ₹1 lakh. Paying rent to parents is legal with a genuine bank trail — they declare it as income. Note: HRA exemption applies in the old regime only.
