What is Professional Tax Registration?

Professional Tax is a state-level tax on professions, trades and employment — applicable in states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, West Bengal, Telangana, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and others (capped at ₹2,500 per person per year). Businesses typically need two registrations: PTEC (the entity’s own enrolment to pay tax on itself) and PTRC (registration as an employer to deduct and deposit PT from employee salaries).

Employers must register within 30 days of becoming liable, deduct PT from salaries as per the state slab, deposit it and file returns on the state schedule. Non-registration and late payment attract interest and penalties that compound quietly.

Taxwapsi identifies your state’s exact requirements, obtains PTEC/PTRC, sets up the deduction slabs in your payroll, and (on our higher plans) files your periodic returns — keeping a low-attention compliance fully handled.

Expert Pro Tip

If you are a company in Maharashtra or Karnataka, you need PTEC even with zero employees — directors and the entity itself are liable. Many startups discover this only via a penalty notice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which states levy professional tax?

Around 20 states/UTs including Maharashtra, Karnataka, West Bengal, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Kerala. Delhi, Haryana, UP and Rajasthan currently do not levy PT.

What is the difference between PTEC and PTRC?

PTEC is the entity’s/professional’s own enrolment to pay tax on its existence/profession (e.g. ₹2,500/year in Maharashtra for companies). PTRC registers you as an employer to deduct PT from employees’ salaries and deposit it with returns.

What is the maximum professional tax?

Article 276 of the Constitution caps it at ₹2,500 per person per year. States set monthly slabs within this — e.g. ₹200/month for higher salary bands (₹300 in February in Maharashtra).

When are payments and returns due?

It varies by state and liability size — Maharashtra PTRC is monthly (or yearly if liability < ₹1 lakh), Karnataka is monthly with an annual return. We hand you the exact calendar for your state.

What are the penalties for non-compliance?

Typically: late registration penalties, interest of 1.25%–2% per month on delayed payment, and fixed penalties for late returns (e.g. ₹1,000 per return in Maharashtra). Prolonged default can bring prosecution provisions.

Are any persons exempt?

Common exemptions include senior citizens (65+), parents of children with disability, members of forces, and badli workers in textile — varying by state. Salaries below the slab threshold attract nil PT.

Do directors and partners pay PT?

Yes — in PT states, directors (non-employees), partners and professionals are typically liable under PTEC individually or via the entity. We map exactly who needs enrolment in your structure.

We have employees in multiple states — where do we register?

PT applies where the employee works. You need PTRC in each PT-levying state where you have employees, with that state’s slabs applied — our multi-state plan handles this centrally.
