Trade License
Municipal permission to run your trade — applications, renewals and inspections handled with your local corporation.
- Operate Without Fear
- Public Trust
- Required for Other Licenses
What is Trade License?
A Trade License is the municipal corporation’s permission to carry on a particular trade or business at particular premises — mandatory under state municipal acts for shops, restaurants, factories, godowns, and businesses dealing with goods/services that affect public health and safety.
Operating without one invites fines and even sealing of premises. The license ensures your trade complies with safety, health and zoning standards set by the local body — and is commonly demanded by other authorities, landlords and franchisors.
Taxwapsi identifies your trade category and the correct municipal authority, prepares the application with premises and safety documents, follows up through inspections where required, and delivers your license — plus timely renewals every year (most licenses expire on 31 March).
Expert Pro Tip
Trade licenses typically expire on 31 March regardless of when issued — calendar the renewal window (often Jan–Mar) because late renewals attract penalties up to 50% of the fee in many corporations.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who needs a trade license?
Any business carrying on a trade listed in the municipal act schedule at premises within that municipal area — shops, eateries, manufacturing units, godowns, service centres and more. Requirements vary by city; we confirm yours before filing.
Trade license vs Shop & Establishment — what’s the difference?
Shop & Establishment (Labour Dept) regulates employment conditions; trade license (Municipal Corporation) authorises the trade itself at the premises from a public health/safety angle. Most physical establishments need both.
How long does it take?
Online corporations issue within 7–15 days for clean applications; trades requiring inspection or fire NOC can take 3–4 weeks. Metro corporations like Delhi MCD, BBMP and KMC have their own timelines.
What is the validity and renewal process?
Generally valid for one financial year, expiring 31 March, renewable annually (some cities offer multi-year renewal). Renewal usually needs just the old license and fee — we automate reminders for clients.
What is the government fee?
Set by each corporation based on trade category, premises size and location — from a few hundred rupees to several thousand. We quote the exact fee for your city upfront.
What happens if I operate without one?
Municipal fines (often daily), prosecution under the municipal act and in serious cases sealing of premises. Regularising afterwards also invites retrospective fees and penalties.
Can the license be transferred?
Many corporations allow transfer on change of ownership or legal heir succession with an application and fee; a change of premises generally needs a fresh license.
Is a trade license needed for an online business?
If you operate from premises where a scheduled trade is carried on (storage, kitchen, workshop), yes — the mode of selling does not matter. Pure home-office service businesses are often outside the schedule; we will confirm for your city.
