FSSAI License & Registration in 2026: Types, Process, Fees & Documents
If you make, store, sell or transport food in India — from a home kitchen to a restaurant chain — you legally need an FSSAI registration or licence. The 14-digit FSSAI number must be printed on your packaging and displayed at your premises. Here's the complete, practical guide.
Which FSSAI category do you need?
- Basic Registration — turnover up to ₹12 lakh/year (small retailers, home-based sellers, hawkers).
- State Licence — turnover ₹12 lakh to ₹20 crore (mid-size manufacturers, restaurants, traders).
- Central Licence — turnover above ₹20 crore, importers/exporters, e-commerce food sellers, or operating in multiple states.
Documents required
- Photo ID and address proof of the proprietor/partners/directors
- Passport-size photograph
- Business address proof (rent agreement/utility bill)
- List of food products handled
- Food safety management plan (for State/Central)
The process
- Pick the right category based on turnover and operations.
- File Form A (Basic) or Form B (State/Central) on the FoSCoS portal.
- Upload documents and pay the fee.
- Department review (and inspection for State/Central).
- Licence issued — valid for 1 to 5 years.
Fees and timeline
Basic registration is ₹100/year; State and Central licences range from ₹2,000–₹7,500/year depending on capacity. Basic registration is often issued within days; State/Central can take 2–4 weeks with inspection. See Taxwapsi's FSSAI plans.
FAQs
Is FSSAI mandatory for a cloud kitchen? Yes — and online aggregators (Swiggy/Zomato) won't onboard you without it.
What if I sell on Amazon/Flipkart? You'll typically need a Central licence as an e-commerce food seller.
